By providing a healthy musical atmosphere conducive to learning, students can achieve their maximum potential and increase their appreciation of all styles of music. My objective in teaching is to provide a safe and pleasurable atmosphere through respect, a positive learning environment, enthusiasm, and individualized lessons to ensure that the student will get the most out of their learning experience. In order to provide an environment favorable for learning, I believe that respect for the student is an extremely important value for a teacher to possess. When there is a mutual respect between student and teacher, the process of learning becomes fun and exciting.
The importance of a positive learning environment cannot be underestimated. Positive reinforcement allows the student to grow and reach their full potential and gives him or her greater confidence in not only music but in other life activities as well. Students are intelligent and immediately recognize a teacher who is not enthusiastic about what they are teaching. A lack of enthusiasm from the teacher negatively affects the student in many ways and does not allow them to progress as much as they could. I understand that the piano can be a difficult instrument to learn, but not impossible. Difficulties and obstacles are a part of the learning process which, as a professional, I face on a daily basis. As a performer and teacher I treat difficulties and obstacles as exciting challenges that breed personal satisfaction when overcome. I understand that not all students face the same obstacles so I believe it is important to individualize my lessons according to each student’s needs. Individualized lesson plans give all students a greater chance to succeed by focusing on their individual learning style, strengths, and weaknesses.
I also believe it is extremely important to stress quality musical fundamentals from the beginning such as proper technique and tonal control of the instrument because a strong technical foundation helps to breed quality musicians at any level. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their child's development as a musician by assisting and supporting them in their practice at home, while more advanced students are expected to have a deeper dedication to their practice. Overall, I believe my purpose as a teacher is three-fold: to help students reach their musical goals, achieve their fullest potential, and encourage a life-long love and respect for all music.
